The competition began as an exhibition match in 1926 between an American team and a team from the British PGA held on the East Course, Wentworth Club, Virginia Water, Surrey, UK. The change was due in part to the success of Spanish golfers such as Seve Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido, who both became the first Spaniard to play in the 1979 event. Team Europe has included players from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, and Sweden since that time.
