Of all the many tragedies written by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet can be named as the most popular and influential of all. A story of the tragic fate of two star-crossed lovers, the plot of the play came from an Italian tale which was only translated into verse forms by different other writers.

Romeo and Juliet can be considered as a collaboration of tragic love stories like Pyramus and Thisbe and Ephesiaca of Xenophon and Ephesus. The story was set in Verona and rotates around the lives of the Montagues and Capulets who despise each other so much to the point of killing each other’s kin. After falling in love, getting secretly married, and being separated by a dark twist of fate, the two ended up killing themselves after thinking each other dead.
