Million Dollar Quartet Theater 2012
Very few music groups seem to captivate the world these days as they once did years ago when individual talent was booming and more than just a stylized puffed up hairstyle and auto-tuned voice over. In the past we have seen some of the best musical and singing performances that have epitomised the past century with talents that many aim to perfect and surpass, though very few these days have the capacity or even the potential. One such group that showed the world what real talent is created from the skills, talents and voices of 4 separate individuals who in the own right were masters of song and dance. They formed The Million Dollar Quartet.
Comprised of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins, who created what is arguably the world’s first supergroup. At the time and still to this day, the term supergroup means “a rock music group whose performers are already famous from having performed individually or in other groups.” The star amongst these stars however could easily be guessed as Elvis Presley, one of the top performers of his time and still famous today. On December 4, the four musicians gathered together at Sun Records in Memphis and unknowingly created one of the greatest jam sessions in history.
The choice and selection of songs that the group performed was mainly situated around Country music and country gospel, but no matter what genre they had decided, they were still the greatest songs of their time. Even today people will hum their songs on the way to work, play them over and over in their mind or just let loose and sing out to an entire crowd.
Most modern day musical performance adaptions don’t come so far as to present any real potential or influence on a past flame, but the Million Dollar Quartet of the 20th century does through their rocking revitalisation of the heart of the 50’s. The jukebox musical was written by Floyd Mutrux and Colin Escott in an effort to dramatize the former recording session of the group and to bring it back to life amongst an audience that could perhaps be described as fresh to the scene.
The musical began in 2010 after several tryouts and has only manage to shoot up and expand further towards a West End production after rave reviews.
Featuring the famous songs of the ol’ Quartet including “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “That’s All Right,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Walk the Line,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Who Do You Love?,” “Matchbox,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Hound Dog” and more, there has never been a more awe inspiring event.
