Wimbledon 2015 is Coming Up!
The 129th edition of the Wimbledon Championships will take place from June 29th through July 12th 2015 at the world renowned All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England. This is third event of the four each year under the Grand Slam tournament. These are the four that draw the most public and media attention, along with pay outs for the players. If anyone was asked to say the first word that comes to mind associated with tennis, Wimbledon is sure to be top on the list. The only major event played on a lawn; it is attended annually by an expansive list of celebrities, athletes, and the rich and famous.
This year is the first time the players can spend three weeks preparing for this tournament in competing on other surfaces of grass. Among the players expected to be there in the men’s division are Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, and Rafael Nadal. Holding the number one spot in the ATP tennis rankings for 150 weeks, Djokovic will be a top pick for champion. He has won eight grand slam tournaments so far. Regaeded as the all time best player in the men’s division is Federer. He is one of seven men to ever win a Grand Slam Title, winning all four in a year. Certain to be a local favorite, Scottish player Andy Murray beat Federer in the 2012 Olympics. This made him the first British singles champion in over one hundred years. Possibly the greatest clay court player ever, Nadal won the gold in the 2008 Olympics. He is a threat on any surface.
Serena Williams, Petra Kvitova, and Simona Halep will be competing amongst the women. Williams has held the number one ranking spot for six times. With her strength and longevity, she is considered to be the number one women’s player of all time. Holding sixteen career singles titles, Kvitova is currently holding the number two position in women’s singles. Halep won her first six WTA titles in one year, which was last achieved by Steffi Graf.
