Many of the bands who have made it big started out as a bunch of friends eager to make music together. It was the same way for one of the greatest band in rock music history, Lynyrd Skynyrd. In 1964, they were just a group of friends who went out and made music together and they have already been successful even though they were still starting out. They won Battle-Of-The-Band competitions, which back then was already a big achievement. After a few name changes, they settled with the name Lynyrd Skynyrd, from the name of their gym teacher, Leonard Skinner, who harbored a hate for men young men with long hair.
The band has been through a lot together and even survived a plan crash that claimed the lives of members, Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines. It was at the peak of their stardom. Prior to the plane crash, they were already making a huge success in the music industry. They have released their first album four years before that and got noticed especially with their very unique name. Their album went platinum three times from their released and featured “Free Bird”. The song had a great meaning and created a great impact on their audience. Their breakthrough single, “Sweet Home Alabama” came with their second album.
From performing as an open act for The Who, they played their own acts and were one of the headlining bands at the Ozark Music Festival in 1974. They came out with more hits and more albums following their first two successful ones. But with the tragedy that struck them, they were forced to lay low. They came back in 1987 with a bang and a new lineup, which surprised and delighted their fans.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was since then regarding as one of the most amazing concert acts that penetrated into the new millennium. Part of their legacy was being included in the list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and that does not come much of a shock considering what they have contributed to the music industry. They have been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame with Free Bird as the third guitar solo of all time.
