Born on December 4th, 1969, the world did not know what it had in store when Shawn Corey Carter came into this world. To some, the name is instantly recognisable whilst to others, a few moments of thinking needs to be taken in order to accurately identify who this individual is. His stage name however is one that is known all over the world. He is the one and only Jay-Z. An American rapper, record producer and entrepreneur, he has also had various small time acting roles. Jay-Z’s claim to fame is his prestigious skill in the music industry and creation of himself as one of the most financially successful hip hop artists in the United Sates, if not the entire world, and is estimated to be personally worth over $450 million, as of 2010. However, Jay-Z’s super star status was not given, but rather earned, through a lifetime of perseverance through struggle and hardship.

His life began in the neighborhoods of Brooklyn, New York City. His father abandoned him at childhood and he became involved in unscrupulous activity, such as shooting his own brother in 1982 for stealing his jewelry. He had attended school alongside other rappers such as Busta Rhymes and The Notorious B.I.G, but did not graduate, having succumb to the evils of the streets and involving himself in selling crack cocaine. This however did not deter from his love for music, which would see him waking his family up at night from the banging of loud drums, prompting his mother to buy him a boom box as a birthday present. His love of music and his personal boom box helped to inspire Jay-Z to freestyle, writing his own lyrics, attempting to follow the music of popular artists of his time. This love of music became known throughout his neighbourhood, who nicknamed him “Jazzy”, eventually turning into his stage name “Jay-Z”. His childhood love progressed through his teenage years as a passion that saw him rise through the industry, starting as a relative unknown before rising higher above expectations and introduced to a larger audience.

Jay-Z is a worldwide name and legendary icon within the music and the Hip Hop industry. He has been nominated for a countless number of awards for various performances and songs on a number of different levels and won many of them as well. It is simply incomprehensible to mention every one of his accolades, and simply, there is no sign of these ending any time soon. His super star status continues to grow and boom within the industry, bringing forth new fans and consistently captivating long-time fans.
