Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson haven’t got the slightest clue of what was in store for them when they first auditioned for the hit reality show The X Factor. They all first started out as competitors hoping to be discovered as the next great solo artist.

Their journey to fame and stardom did not turn out as smooth as they hoped for it to be. They all failed to qualify for the “boys” category of The X Factor. But as they say, when a door closes Nicole Scherzinger will come up with a brilliant advice. It was the show judge’s idea to put these very different people together in one group. And oddly enough, it worked pretty well.

Niall James Horan auditioned as solo candidate for the seventh series of The X Factor. He had been playing guitar since he was young. He said his guitar was the best gift he had ever received for Christmas. His gift was discovered by his aunt during a car trip when she thought she heard the radio while little Niall was singing. He performed “so sick” in his audition and received mixed comments from the judges. He was eventually sent to boot camp and ultimately, was rejected for the “boys” category and was put in One Direction group.

Zayn Malik’s audtion wasn’t even broadcasted initially and was only aired after the series ended on companion show The Xtra Factor. Zayn was noted for having Simon Cowell to come, personally, backstage to convince him to go back to their dance practice at boot camp. However, he failed to qualify for “boys” category and was put in One Direction instead.

Meanwhile despite the broken nose perforated ear drum and previous rejection, Liam James Payne still carried on his dream and tried out for The X factor. He auditioned before but Simon thought he wasn’t ready for the competition yet and told him to come back after 2 years. After two years he received a standing ovation from the audience and Simon as well when he sang “cry me a river” in his audition. However that wasn’t enough to get him to the “boys” category. At boot camp, he sang “stop crying your heart out” he didn’t qualify and was put in One Direction instead.

Harry Styles had his own band before he joined The X factor. He auditioned with “Isn’t She Lovely”, receiving positive comments from two of the three judges, with Louis Walsh having doubts on whether he was ready to progress in the competition. Like fellow member Zayn he also sang “Stop Crying Your Heart Out” before being rejected and put into One Direction.

Louis William Tomlinson used to be an extra for the sitcom series “Fat Friends” he also used to star in a drama called “If I Had You”, and had a small part in Waterloo Road. Instead of pursuing an acting career he chose to the path to music. He auditioned for The X Factor with the song “Hey There Delilah”, receiving votes from all three judges. At boot camp, he sang “Make You Feel My Love” before being rejected and put into One Direction.

Despite their differences, these boys managed to make good, harmonious music. They were signed to Simon Cowell’s record label Syco Records after placing third in the seventh series of The X Factor. They later signed in North America to Columbia Records.

Their debut album, Up All Night, followed in November 2011, and debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart on the 21st of March 2012. Up All Night debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling 176,000 copies in its first week, making One Direction the first UK group in history to debut at number one with their first album.
