Glastonbury Music Festival Cancelled due to Coronavirus Pandemic

19th March 2020 | Category: Concerts

Festival organizers Michael and Emily Eavis have confirmed that Glastonbury Music Festival is canceled this year.

The 2020 event that was to feature Paul McCartneyTaylor Swift, and Kendrick Lamar will no longer take place, because of the concerns and government orders over the coronavirus outbreak.

The event was set to take place from June 24-28 at Worthy Farm in Somerset. The official statement said that 2020 would be “an enforced fallow year”.

“Clearly this was not a course of action we hoped to take for our 50th anniversary event, but following the new government measures announced this week – and in times of such unprecedented uncertainty – this is now our only viable option,” the organizers said.

Even though they hoped the situation in the UK would have improved by the end of June, it isn’t possible to spend the next three months with thousands of crew on the farm.

“We were so looking forward to welcoming you all for our 50th anniversary with a lineup full of fantastic artists and performers that we were incredibly proud to have booked.

Again, we’re so sorry that this decision has been made. It was not through choice,” they said.

As for the tickets that have been bought for this year, they will roll over to next year.

“Ticket-holders will have the chance to roll their £50 deposit over to next year and guarantee the opportunity to buy a ticket for Glastonbury 2021, while those who want a refund can apply for one.

Further information on coach packages, official accommodation bookings and other tickets will be added to the festival’s website in the next few days.”

Glastonbury Festival has become the largest greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world.

Since its humble beginnings as a gathering of 1,500 people in September 1970, it has developed into an event with more than 200,000 attendees.

This year was supposed to be its 50th anniversary.

Glastonbury isn’t the only festival that’s been canceled or rescheduled as a result of the Covid-19 virus outbreak. So far, other major festivals also had to close its gates, for now. One of these is Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and Bonnaroo, which have been postponed to later this year.

If you have bought tickets to any of these festivals, make sure to follow the instructions of the festivals’ official sites to find out what you can do with them.
