Elton John’s four decade career has been very successful, selling more than 250 million records which placed him in the list of the most successful artists of all time. His single, one of my favorites, Candle in the Wind (1997) alone has sold over 33 million copies worldwide making it the best selling single in Billboard history. He has won six Grammies, four Brit Awards, a Golden Globe, Tony Award and an Academy Award. The Rolling Stones ranked him as number 49 on the list of 100 greatest artists of all time. John was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, unlike most artists who anticipate it for decades before getting inducted. As part of his musical success and his charitable services, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has given John his knighthood after being named as the Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

He doesn’t only give people hope and happiness through his music but he has also helped them in so many ways. Since the late 1980’s John has used many of his time and resources in participating in the fight against AIDS. In 1992, he established the Elton John AIDS Foundation and began hosting the annual Academy Award Party which has risen over $200 million since its inception.

Like most notable artist, John didn’t start big and easy. He started as a pianist in a pub earning £35 a week which led him to the path of beginning his career with many other artists and later on he became a critically acclaimed solo artist. John has been known to wearing flamboyant clothing onstage mostly wearing hats and masks in various shapes, designs and colors. Decades after, he still has the overpowering talent and charisma that on his 60th birthday, he performed at the Madison Square Garden which is viewed by millions as it was released in 17 different versions worldwide.

Despite the controversies surrounding John’s life including his sexuality, health and wealth, he continues bringing beautiful music to his fans and help has been pouring from him ever since. Apart from the AIDS Foundation that he started, he also participates with Activism regarding the discrimination of the LGBT community along with artist Cyndi Lauper.

At 64 years old, it may seem that John has experienced everything yet his stint in the music industry is not yet over. After this 3000th concert last year, John is going on a tour again in North and South America, Europe and Asia.
