Broadway shows are currently expected to be suspended until May 2021 due to the pandemic. The latest announcement said that the show intends to return to the Broadway stage on September 17, 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Details of a venue have yet to be confirmed, with the show\u2019s original theatre, the Hudson Theatre, already booked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Earlier this year, Spike Lee directed and produced <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American Utopia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a concert film based on a screenplay by David Byrne. The film is a live recording of a Broadway performance of American Utopia&#8217;s run at Broadway\u2019s Hudson Theatre. Byrne is joined onstage by 11 musicians, singers and dancers, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;inviting audiences into a joyous dreamworld where human connection, self-evolution and social justice are paramount.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It had its world premiere at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2020. The movie also premiered on HBO on October 17.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Byrne said he contacted Lee about directing the film before it was even on Broadway, when it was being workshopped in Boston.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meanwhile, Lee said in a statement: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt is my honor and privilege that my art brother, Mr. David Byrne, asked me to join him in concert, to invite me into his magnificent world of American Utopia.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSpike and I have crossed paths many times over the years,&#8221; Byrne added. &#8220;Obviously I\u2019m a huge fan, and now finally here was an opportunity for us to work together.
