{"id":31701,"date":"2020-07-09T07:00:13","date_gmt":"2020-07-09T14:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ticketcenter.com\/news\/?p=31701"},"modified":"2020-07-09T07:00:13","modified_gmt":"2020-07-09T14:00:13","slug":"animal-collective-share-new-ep-and-apologize-for-using-racist-stereotype-in-artwork","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ticketcenter.com\/news\/concerts\/animal-collective-share-new-ep-and-apologize-for-using-racist-stereotype-in-artwork\/","title":{"rendered":"Animal Collective Share New EP and Apologize for Using \u2018Racist Stereotype\u2019 in Artwork"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bridge To Quiet\" width=\"860\" height=\"645\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WUuWVB1v9Qo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ticketcenter.com\/animal-collective-tickets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Animal Collective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have released a new EP titled Bridge to Quiet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Assembled in April and May, it comes from a series of improvisations recorded over the previous year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe remixed them, collaged them, and built them into songs,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> they wrote, adding that the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201ccathartic process\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> also pushed them to begin another <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cnew project in the same fashion.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The majority of the band\u2019s catalog is available on Bandcamp, including all of their LPs and the digital debut of several deep cuts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a recent newsletter to fans, the experimental Brooklyn group has addressed racist connotations of some of their older work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They\u2019ve decided to change the album artwork of their 2006 \u2018People\u2019 EP, labeling it a \u201cracist stereotype\u201d, and the title of their 2003 album \u2018Here Comes The Indian\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The artwork for the \u2018People\u2019 EP is a cartoon depiction of a black nanny with two white children, identified as an offensive \u201cmammy\u201d US stereotype, rooted in slavery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere is no way to excuse using a \u201cmammy\u201d on our artwork, and so we have decided to remove it,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Animal Collective wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe understand now that using a racist stereotype at all causes more damage than an explanation can repair, and we apologize. Moving forward, we will be donating a portion of our royalties from this record to the Equal Justice Initiative.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Animal Collective have also said they would change the title of \u2018Here Comes The Indian\u2019 to its working title, \u2018Ark\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The band then committed to donate a portion of the royalties to their 2017 \u2018Meeting of the Waters\u2019 EP to Cultural Survival. The EP included samples of the Tatuyo tribe in Brazil playing music for the Viceland program Earthworks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWith utmost respect to Indigenous people we feel that having the word Indian in our record title sends the wrong message by objectifying the American Indian people which is not what we were intending with the music,\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBecause we have drawn countless inspiration from Indigenous people in America and around the world, moving forward, we will be donating a portion of our royalties from this record to Seeding Sovereignty, and changing the title to its original working title, Ark.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additionally, they\u2019ll be splitting a donation of $10,000, along with all of the proceeds from their 7\/3 Bandcamp sales, between Cultural Survival, Equal Justice Initiative, Seeding Sovereignty, Southerners on New Ground, and The Okra Project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The tickets for Animal Collective shows can be found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ticketcenter.com\/animal-collective-tickets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Animal Collective have released a new EP titled Bridge to Quiet.
