‘U2' is known as much for its post-punk exuberance as it is for making candid political statements through its music. Like other success sagas, ‘U2' has an interesting back story. The band was formed when a young Larry Mullen posted an ad on his school notice board, inviting other musicians to join him. The notice was responded by Paul Hewson (Bono), Dave Evans or ‘The Edge', and Adam Clayton. After several name changes the band finally settled on the name ‘U2'. Their first EP, ‘Three', was released in the late 70's and was a big success in Ireland. Their first studio album, ‘Boy' was released in 1980 and it successfully showcased their raw talent. This was followed by two other albums, ‘October' and ‘War'. The band found it's USP with its 4th release, ‘The Unforgettable Fire'. The mid 80's marked the beginning of a golden era for ‘U2' where they won 2 Grammies for ‘The Joshua Tree'. By now, ‘U2' had a cult following and their approach towards music was highly appreciated by critics. The 90's saw them in a different avatar with several hit singles such as ‘The Fly', ‘Numb' and the ‘discotheque'. In 2000, their album ‘All that you can't leave behind' won 12 Grammies and was certified 4x platinum in the US. This was followed by ‘How to dismantle an atomic bomb' which was again a roaring success. The album won 9 Grammy awards and was certified 3x platinum in the US. Their latest album ‘No lines in the horizon' was released in early 2009 and has been certified platinum in many countries around the world.
