The Ryder Cup is a golf trophy given to the winners of the Ryder Cup Matches, which is an event between teams from Europe and the United States every two years. Samuel Ryder donated the golf trophy. The competition is orchestrated by the PGA of America and the PGA European Tour, with competition every two years and the venue alternating between courses in the United States and Europe.
The competition began as an exhibition match in 1926 between an American team and a team from the British PGA held on the East Course, Wentworth Club, Virginia Water, Surrey, UK. In 1979, the decision to include teams from continental Europe after World War II due to the unfair advantage of the US with dominance over other teams. The change was due in part to the success of Spanish golfers such as Seve Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido, who both became the first Spaniard to play in the 1979 event. Team Europe has included players from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, and Sweden since that time.
