Wicked Becomes Eighth Longest-running Show on Broadway

12th September 2017 | Category: Theater

We are thrilled to announce that “Wicked” became the eighth longest-running show on Broadway with its 5,759th performance at the Gershwin Theatre this August.

The musical is surpassing “Mamma Mia” after its great success and popularity gained since the 2003 premiere. The number one is “Phantom of the Opera”, followed by “Chicago”, “The Lion King”, “Cats”, “Les Miserables”, “A Chorus Line” and “Oh! Calcuta!” in seventh place.

It is not the only chart this musical went up this year. In July 2017, Wicked surpassed “The Phantom of the Opera” as Broadway’s second-highest-grossing show, now trailing only “The Lion King”.

If you still haven’t seen this cultural phenomenon, now is your chance to buy the tickets here and enjoy Broadway’s biggest blockbuster. According to critics, if every musical had the brain, heart and courage of “Wicked”, Broadway would be a magical place. Don’t miss it!

Wicked: the Untold Story of the Witches of Oz with the music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman, won 3 Tony Awards, 7 Drama Desk Awards, 4 Outer Critic Circle Awards and a Grammy with its original production. This Broadway musical looks at what happened in Oz from a different angle, shedding a new light on the original characters and plot of “Wizard of Oz” we all liked when we were young.

A young woman, Elphaba, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery, misunderstood and with an extraordinary talent. She meets a bubbly blonde Glinda and their initial rivalry turns into the unexpected friendship. Elphaba’s dream was to meet the famous Wizard of Oz and do well but soon, she realized he is merely a charlatan and has no powers.

He only tried to use her and after she refused, the Wizard and his secretary spread rumors about her being dangerous and not to be trusted. Glinda stayed by Wizard’s side since he promised to make her dreams come true. Following the Wizard’s lead, the world decided to put prejudicial labels on them, calling Glinda the good and Elphaba the wicked witch.

Join Elphaba on her magical journey in a fight against evil and purchase tickets for all venues here.
